It isn’t an open-world exploration game, the way A Hat in Time is (with a couple of exceptions, like Dead Bird Studios and Arctic Cruise, which are a bit more linear). Mario Galaxy is a series of linear levels that just happen to share some assets. Alpine Skyline and Nyakuza Metro barely change at all they’re probably closer to the way Mario 64 does it, where you just explore the area to find new collectibles. This is exactly how Sunshine works you always have the same layout for Bianco Hills or Hotel Delfino, but there might be a broken bridge or a bunch of goo everywhere. You visit the same area for each mission, maybe with slight changes depending on the mission. Galaxy takes you through linear paths that may share a single planet at the start. That’s much closer to how Mario 64 or Sunshine work, though.
